REACH TEAMS UP WITH RENOVATION CONCEPTS
TO HELP A SOUTHEAST PORTLAND RESIDENT
PORTLAND, OR – More than 20 local businesses are joining REACH on Saturday, June 5
to help a southeast Portland senior make her home safe and livable by donating over$15,000 worth of home improvement supplies and materials.
Volunteers from RenovationConcepts, Portland’s leading team of sustainable building and design professionals, are teaming up with REACH Community Development to complete repairs on the home of a recently widowed 68-year-old Richmond neighborhood resident. The homeowner has received several citations from the City for a variety of housing code violations and is currently living in her car. It’s just too expensive for her to make the repairs in the current economic downturn.
“This time in my life has been so dark. Working with all these nice, generous people has been a light in my life. There are no words to explain what this means to me,” says the homeowner.
The economic downturn has hit Oregon homeowners especially hard, particularly seniors who are struggling to pay their mortgages and continue basic upkeep on their homes.
REACH responds to this community need by providing free home repairs for senior homeowners throughout Portland.
Renovation Concepts members AAA Heating & Cooling; Bollinger Window Fashions; Builddesign, LLC; Emma Shea Interiors; Gene Darco Painting; Interstate Flooring Co; JB Construction Inc.; Joan Mullen Woods Interiors; LandServices; Olson & Jones; RailPro USA;Reds Electric; Sofa Table Chair; Stevens Printing; The Whole 9 Yards; and Zion Metal Works are all donating their time and resources to help this homeowner.
“As members of the building and design community in Portland, we are honored to be able to dedicate our time and talents to this project,” says LaDonna Miller, President. “We’re very excited about the opportunity to work with REACH. We sincerely hope our efforts make a difference in this homeowner’s life.”
“REACH is committed to helping Portland’s seniors be able to live safely in their homes,” says Dee Walsh, Executive Director. “We’re thrilled to be partnering with Renovation Concepts, who’re dedicating a very generous amount of their time and resources to provide a vital resource to seniors who can’t afford to keep their homes safe and livable.”

Since the City of Portland is known as a leading Green City- it is always interesting to attend a forum where great minds unite and talk about Sustainability. This event being held at Portland State University on May 20th from 7-9 pm, is one that you should mark on your calendars and plan to attend.

News: The Oregonian: Portland State University offers second annual forum: ‘Understanding Sustainability: Perspectives from the Humanities’Author:By Carrie Sturrock Posted:May 10, 2010
http://blog.oregonlive.com/pdxgreen/2010/05/portland_satte_university_offe.html
A humanities scholar, a social scientist, a city planner and an artist might all come at sustainability from a different perspective but together they can enrich and inform each other. That’s the goal behind Portland State University’s second annual forum “Understanding Sustainability: Perspectives from the Humanities” May 20-22.
The forum is free and open to the public and promises to be less academic and more accessible to regular people like me than last year’s. The three-day event brings together 60 scholars from different disciplines and backgrounds “to draw out the controversies over the meaning and practice of sustainability” through panel discussions and conversations. Natalie Jeremijenko will give the keynote address “After Copenhagen: Emerging Strategies of Political Participation” Thursday, May 20, 7-9 p.m. after opening remarks.
Jeremijenko, the event’s promoters write, “is an internationally recognized artist and engineer whose work primarily explores the interface between society, the environment and technology. She is currently an associate professor at New York University in the Visual Art Department, and has affiliated faculty appointments in Computer Science and Environmental Studies.”
